2017 NFL Mock Draft

March 24, 2017

1.) Cleveland Browns

Name
Myles Garret
Position
Defensive end
Height
6'5"
Weight
269 lbs
College
Texas A&M

From a numbers perspective Myles Garrett would of needed to do something catastrophic to miss out on being the first player drafted.  However, that wasnt the case at the 2017 Combine.  Garrett showed up and simply put on a show proving he is the best player in this class.  Not only that but he also addressed the media to apologize about his comments about a potential Dallas trade. Cleveland still hasn’t made any progress towards this age old quarterback search but its comparing gold to grass to take a QB over best available in this draft.

 2.) San Francisco 49ers

Name
Jamal Adams
Position
Safety
Height
6' 0"
Weight
211
College
LSU

The 49er’s are essentially drafting with an open palate with the ability to go in virtually any direction.  This leads me to think they may trade out of the pick but for mock drafting purposes I think they go with Jamal Adams.

John Lynch was a long time leader of one of the best defenses ever in Tampa Bay.  Adams, much like Lynch, is that leader type of safety.  He can make all the plays and most of all, be that set of eyes to line everyone up and motivate a defense to be great. Have one good look at the 49er’s defensive roster and the SS spot jumps out at you to be filled.

3.) Chicago Bears

Name
Solomon Thomas
Position
Defensive end
Height
6' 3"
Weight
270
College
Stanford

Chicago may not be making good off season moves, especially signing Mike Glennon to a big deal and letting their only premier WR walk but this tells me they see some talent in this draft. However I dont see them addressing offense with the 3rd pick.  The only viable offensive option at #3 would be Leonard Fournette but with Langford and Howard at running back, I see them filling a big need on defense.

John Fox is a defensive mind and Solomon Thomas may be the most versatile player in this draft. He’ll be able to dominate at 4-3 or 3-4 DE.

4.) Jacksonville Jaguars

Name
Leonard Fournette
Position
Running back
Height
6' 1"
Weight
235
College
LSU

General Manager, Dave Caldwell, said at a press conference that the Jags will be taking the best player available at #4 but that all depends on how an organization ranks their big board.  In hindsight, most mockers would have Jonathan Allen ranked in the top 3, leaving him to go to Jacksonville. However with Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville and loving the smash mouth running offense, Leonard Fournette is that guy.

5.) Tennessee Titans

Name
Jonathan Allen
Position
Defensive tackle, Defensive end
Height
6' 3"
Weight
290
College
Alabama

With the recent signing of Jonathan Cyprien, Tennessee seems to be preparing to either A.) miss out on Adams or B.) have their eye on someone else.  Either way with the rising Solomon Thomas this leads me to believe Jonathan Allen will be that guy.  He can play at either DE or DT in all systems. The medical issues will be the wild card on how far he falls.  Many says the arthritis isn’t bad but in such a deep defensive draft class, teams dont need to mess with it if they dont want to.

6.) New York Jets

Name
Marshon Lattimore
Position
Cornerback
Height
6' 0"
Weight
195
College
Ohio State

The Jets have been making some rather big moves this off-season by releasing Brandon Marshall, Nick Mangold, and possibly Eric Decker.  This leaves that offense looking pretty poor.  Regardless the Jets play in a division in which its critical to be able to defend the pass more than run game.  Lattimore has shown a lot of promise in his one year of starting as well as world class speed.

7.) Los Angeles Chargers

Name
Malik Hooker
Position
Safety
Height
6' 0"
Weight
202
College
Ohio State

With Gus Bradley taking over as the new defensive coordinator, he’ll likely want to switch back to his 4-3/Tampa 2 defense.  If thats the case, Bradley relies heavy on the play a center field type free safety.  Malik Hooker is just that.  He’s battled some injuries this offseason which may drop his stock even more but as for now, Hooker will find a good home in LA (almost typed San Diego).

 8.) Caroliona Panthers

Name
Derek Barnett
Position
Defensive end
Height
6' 3"
Weight
270
College
Tennessee

I could stop with mentioning the Ealy trade to make this pick make sense but maybe behind the scenes there was more to it.  Regardless Barnett will be the best pass rusher available here and he’s the pick.

9.) Cincinnati Bengals

Name
Cam Robinson
Position
Offensive tackle
Height
6' 6"
Weight
310
College
Alabama

This may be my boldest pick in this mock.  But Cincy lost Kevin Zeitler and Andrew Whitworth to free agency, thats a lot to lose on the offensive line with no replacements. Robinson has been up and down mock boards this offseason but he put on a good combine and the tape against Myles Garrett doesnt lie.  Robinson has the ability to play guard or either tackle, making this very appealing for the Bengals.

10.) Buffalo Bills

Name
Mike Williams
Position
Wide receiver
Height
6' 3"
Weight
225
College
Clemson

Many mockers are putting a QB here but realistically the Bills would not have gone through all that work and wait to keep Tyrod on the roster if they had other plans.  Additionally, Cardale Jones seems to be progressing fine as the next man up under center.

Speaking of quarterback play, Buffalo ranked 31st in passing last year and lost Robert Woods in free agency this year.  Enter Mike Williams, this should provide the Bills that 1-2 receiver punch that all teams strive for. Behind Sammy Watkins, this may be the thinnest WR depth in the NFL.

 11.) New Orleans Saints

Name
Marlon Humphrey
Position
Cornerback
Height
6' 1"
Weight
195
College
Alabama

I have a feeling this whole draft is going to be a mud slide. New Orleans needs to start looking at quarterbacks after Brees, but ultimately need help all over that defense.  I can’t remember the last time NO had a viable option at CB.  It may be hard to think about Sidney Jones here as he’s going to be a waiting game so for now I’ll put Marlon Humphrey here as a day 1 starter.

12.) Cleveland Browns

Name
O.J. Howard
Position
Tight end
Height
6' 4"
Weight
255
College
Alabama

This is the pick that the Cleveland internet trolls get on me about because its never what they want. For the sake of Cleveland needing help all over and OJ Howard being one of the most dynamic players in this draft.  Plug him in and he’s an immediate help in the receiving game as well as the blocking game.

13.) Arizona Cardinals

Name
Mitch Trubisky
Position
Quarterback
Height
6' 3"
Weight
220
College
North Carolina

This pick may be a stretch but Arizona has to be thinking about a quarterback after Palmer soon enough.  The depth behind Carson is weak.  This would give Trubisky a great chance to sit for a year or two and then come onto the stage. Let the QB run start.

 14.) Philadelphia Eagles

Name
Dalvin Cook
Position
Running back
Height
5' 11"
Weight
206
Past Teams
Florida State

Dalvin Cook draws comparison to Edgrinn James, making the look of this pick appealing.  I find it attractive because this may be the solution to propelling Wentz to the next level.  Cook is devastating in the passing game, giving his quarterback that check down option every play as well as giving the play action a lot more honesty.

15.) Indianapolis Colts

Name
Reuben Foster
Position
Middle linebacker
Height
6' 1"
Weight
240
College
Alabama

Reuben Foster is such a hit or miss prospect.  Coming into this process he was a no doubt top 5 pick, he then threw a fit at the combine, met with teams to smooth that out, and now is showing a lot football IQ.  Your guess to where he lands is as good as anyone’s but going 15 to the Colts would be great for them.  If he can show to be a good player off and on the field, this should provide a long term answer for them at any LB spot.

16.) Baltimore Ravens

Name
Christian McCaffrey
Position
Running back
Height
6' 0"
Weight
205
College
Stanford

I’m going against the grain and thinking Baltimore might look at RB.  Life after Ray Rice has been humbling for Baltimore.  They’ve brought in a number of names at the RB position but still seem to be searching for an answer.  With Danny Woodhead coming to town, it might provide a good mentor for  McCaffrey to learn from.

 17.) Washington Redskins

Name
Malik McDowell
Position
Defensive tackle, Defensive end
Height
6' 6"
Weight
280
College
Michigan State

Malik McDowell draws about every knock and upside a player can possibly get.  I’ve watched quite a bit of him on tape and all I see is a prototypical 3-4 defensive end that gets pressure on almost every play.  This guy can dominate.

18.) Tennessee Titans

Name
Corey Davis
Position
Wide receiver
Height
6' 3"
Weight
205
College
Western Michigan

Tennessee is sneaky good on offense but Corey Davis falling to them at 18 would be a match made in heaven.  We’ll see a lot of offensive talent drop in this draft due to the magnitude of good defensive players.

19.) Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Name
Teez Tabor
Position
Cornerback
Height
6' 0"
Weight
190
College
Florida

On paper this may look like a reach but the home town discount may pay off. Tabor has said to train with Hargreaves frequently leading me to believe VH3 will help the Bucs front office decide on drafting him. Tabor looks disappointing from a numbers perspective but put on his film and he is a true football player.

 20.) Denver Broncos

Name
Ryan Ramczyk
Position
Offensive tackle
Height
6' 6"
Weight
315
College
Wisconsin

Tony Romo? It doesnt matter, no quarterback will prevail in Denver until they get some protection. It just so happens that my #1 offensive lineman is still on my board at pick 20.  Ryan Ramczyk is strong at the point of attack and has the ability to turn defenders to open up running lanes as well as create a pocket for his quarterback.

21.) Detroit Lions

Name
John Ross
Position
Wide receiver
Height
5' 11"
Weight
190
College
Washington

4.22 speed with Staffords arm? This may be an electric combination everyone would want to watch. Life after Megatron and taken a lot out of the Lions lately but adding a speedy John Ross could resurrect that mojo.

22.) Miami Dolphins

Name
Haason Reddick
Position
Outside linebacker
Height
6' 1"
Weight
230

Miami proved their offense can drive with Adam Gase as the coach. The outside of the pass rush, their defense was the weak point of the team.  In years past linebacker was always a glaring hole and Miami. Reddick is one of this years fastest risers for good reason.

 23.) New York Giants

Name
Garett Bolles
Position
Offensive tackle
Height
6' 5"
Weight
300
College
Utah

After spending over $200 million on defense last year, this pick has the look of an offensive player. Ereck Flowers turned out to be a dumpster fire who contributed to their 29th ranked rushing offense.  Garrett Bolles should win that starting LT position without a competition. He comes from a bad past including drug use and anger but thankfully he found his way and turned all that negativity into a controlled sense of nastiness on the football field.

24.) Oakland Raiders

Name
TJ Watt
Position
Outside linebacker
Height
6' 5"
Weight
245
College
Wisconsin

Reggie McKenzie is not scared to reach for a player in the draft. Something the fans may not know is he played LB at the University of Tennesse, something the fans do hopefully know is Oakland needs help at linebacker.  A lot of Raider fans that I talk with are hopeful for Reddick but with his rising stock, I’m sure he’ll go higher than 24.  With the last name of Watt, its almost worth the risk drafting this kid for any position.  An unknown team(or two) have said TJ would be a prime middle linebacker at the NFL level, a position in which Oakland would love. I also look at the next team on the click and know that they would love to have 2 Watts on the same team.

25.) Houston Texans

Name
DeShaun Watson
Position
Quarterback
Height
6' 2"
Weight
210
College
Clemson

I understand Tom Savage has shown to be a serviceable quarterback but I dont think anyone can deem him as an NFL starter yet.  Whether it was Brock or Tom at quarterback, Houston ranked 29th in passing last year.  Hopefully thats enough to know that a gamble on a quarterback would be smart.

 26.) Seattle Seahawks

Name
Qunicy Wilson
Position
Cornerback
Height
6' 1"
Weight
213
College
Florida

Ever since the Legion of Boom first got broke up, Seattle struggled to find a replacement at CB2.  Wilson doesnt get a lot of talking about in such a deep class but regardless he’s a BIG corner capable of being a #1 if the occasion arises.

27.) Kansas City Chiefs

Name
Raekwon McMillian
Position
Middle linebacker
Height
6' 2"
Weight
245
College
Ohio State

Chiefs fan can finally exhale as I moved a running back out of this spot.  With Derek Johnson coming back from injury and garden variety middle linebackers McMillian could be a plug and play guy.  If you doubt that he’s a 1st round talent, go watch his tape and watch the skills he proved at the combine.

28.) Dallas Cowboys

Name
Jabrill Peppers
Position
Safety
Height
6' 0"
Weight
208
College
Michigan

Dallas seems to love superstars.  Peppers may not be the most polished safety in this class but with a guy possessing that much athleticism, its hard not to take a chance on him.  Barry Church is leaving town in free agency, leaving that hole starring Jabrill right in the face.

 29.) Green Bay Packers

Name
Takkarist Mckinley
Position
Outside linebacker, Defensive end
Height
6' 2"
Weight
265
College
UCLA

Green Bay simply loves pass rushers. I dont remember the last time they’re running defense was credible but I also don’t remember the last time teams didnt have to plan for their pass rush.  With Peppers on the way out and Clay Mathews wearing a huge question mark it might be a perfect time to invest in the young pass rusher from UCLA.

30.) Pittsburgh Steelers

Name
Taco Charlton
Position
Defensive end
Height
6' 6"
Weight
270
College
Michigan

Taco is one of those prospect that may sneak into the top 15 of fall to the late 1st.  Regardless if Pittsburgh gets their hands on him it will greatly help that pass rush that they are known for.

31.) Atlanta Falcons

Name
Charles Harris
Position
Defensive end
Height
6' 3"
Weight
255
College
Missouri

This draft class is stacked with pass rushers. Despite Vic Beasley racking up 15.5 sacks, we all watched Atlanta defense bog down to a seeming halt in the second half of the Super Bowl.  Charles Harris provides that depth and pass rushing DE/OLB that can help close out games.  He has great bend and get off to burn tackles into the 4th quarter.

32.) New Orleans Saints

via New England trade for Brandon Cooks
Name
DeShone Kizer
Position
Quarterback
Height
6' 4"
Weight
230
College
Notre Dame

This trade allows New Orleans a chance to get their hands on a quarterback after Brees.  No one knows how the QB’s will fall, nor where but if Kizer makes it this far it should be a slam dunk for Payton and his staff.
